New viruses to treat bacterial diseases

With antibiotics now over-prescribed for treatments of bacterial infections, and patients failing to complete their courses of treatment properly, many bacteria are able to pick up an entire
array of antibiotic resistance genes easily by swapping genetic material with each other.

MRSA – the multiple drug resistant strain of Staphylococcus aureus - and newly emerging strains of the superbug Clostridium difficile have forced medical researchers to realise that an entirely different approach is required to combat these bacteria.

“By using a virus that only attacks bacteria, called a phage – and some phages only attack specific types of bacteria – we can treat infections by targeting the exact strain of bacteria causing the disease”, says Ana Toribio from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in Hinxton, Cambridgeshire, UK. “This is much more targeted than conventional antibiotic therapy”.

Wine May Curb Cavities

Even with the alcohol removed, red wine and white wine may fight bacteria that cause cavities, an Italian study shows.

Before you toast the findings, remember that the study was done in test tubes. So it's too soon to count on a glass of wine to chase your cavities away.

The researchers, who work at Italy's University of Pavia, included Gabriella Gazzani, PhD.

First, they went to a local grocery store, where they bought some valpolicella (an Italian red wine) and pinot nero (an Italian white

Defense against Ancient Virus Opened Door to HIV: Scientific American

Early humans successfully fended off a virus that infected chimpanzees by evolving a protein capable of neutralizing it, according to a new study. But what goes around comes around, evolutionarily speaking: Four million years later, the same protein seems to have left us more vulnerable than other primates to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

When researchers sequenced the chimpanzee genome in 2005, the biggest difference between it and the human genome was the extinct PtERV1 retrovirus,

HIV infection theory challenged

HIV attacks human immune cells, called T helper cells. Loss of these cells is gradual, often taking many years.

It was thought infected cells produced more HIV particles and that this caused the body to activate more T cells which in turn were infected and killed.

Modelling by UK and US researchers suggests that, if that was true, cells would die out in months not years.

The UN says 5.7 million people in India have the HIV virus, the highest number in the world.

But Ashok Alexander, of the anti-Aids Avahan organisation says figures due out soon could be "substantially lower", the Associated Press reports.

The BBC has learned that the figure could be as low as three million.

Cursed, Yet Blessed - TIME

Agnes Munyiva has never thought of herself as a lucky woman. Desperately poor, she works as a prostitute out of her home, a tiny tin-roofed hut on the outskirts of Nairobi. To feed her family of five she entertains as many as 10 clients a day on her children's bed, charging the going rate of 25 cents a trick. Her latest boyfriend just landed in jail, and her kids -- forced to play outside in the mud while their mama "has a guest" -- often go hungry on a skimpy diet of corn mash.

Salmonella from a pet turtle killed a four-week-old baby earlier this year in a case that showed the reptiles are not safe for children, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Thursday.

The CDC expressed concern that sales of baby turtles were on the increase, despite the 1975 federal "Four-Inch Law" that forbids the sale of turtles with a carapace length of less than four 4 inches.

Small baby turtles were once popular pets across the United States until the Food and

The World Bank has approved an $80 million credit to help Kenya in its fight against AIDS, which the government says kills hundreds of people daily.

The money will be used to improve governance in the state-run National AIDS Control Council, which coordinates activities of non-governmental organizations involved in the fight against AIDS. Some of the money will also be given as grants to non-governmental organizations.
