Ramatu Musa has little doubt why her eldest son is deaf. He is, she alleges, a victim of an illegal drug trial in Nigeria by Pfizer, the world’s largest drug company.

“I am so bitter because he is my eldest. All my hopes were on him. I expected him to care for me when I am older,” Mrs Musa, 47, told The Times. “We are poor. I have no money to look after him. They [Pfizer] did this to him.”

Drug abuse experts say the arrest of Al Gore's son underscores the growing problem of prescription drug abuse among America's youth. College students use the stimulant Adderall, an attention deficit drug, to get a speedy high or pull all-nighters.

The other drugs police say they found in Al Gore III's possession - marijuana, Xanax, Valium and Vicodin - also are campus favorites, experts say.

Every few days, Houston businessman Richard Weissenborn receives injections of a radical new cancer drug at a hospital here.

The treatment aims to check his head and neck cancers by replacing mutant genes with good copies. The treatment is still experimental in the United States, but in China, it was approved for marketing after a few years of testing.
